The graduate certificate areas of study are developed in accordance with the graduate education mission. Students can receive certificates if they have completed special course work that has been approved by the Graduate Council. The Graduate School does not describe the graduate certificate as a degree; rather, it is a concentrated set of courses that, once completed, provides the student with a record of distinct academic achievement in a given discipline or set of associated disciplines. Moreover, the graduate certificate is not viewed as a guaranteed means of entry into a graduate degree program. While the courses that make up a graduate certificate can be used to support a student’s application for admission to a degree program, the certificate itself is not a requirement.
