Is there any way to find out if I need to bring my birth certificate to Costa Rica? I’ll certainly have my passport and driver’s license, and I’d rather not carry any other identification unless absolutely necessary.
No, you’ll need only a passport that’s valid for at least 90 days after your arrival and a driver’s license if you plan to rent a car. You should keep a copy of your passport front page and entry stamp in your luggage and leave the original in the hotel safe.
However, I recommend scanning and uploading your documents to your email (if you have a gmail, hotmail, or yahoo account, for example) as I learned from one of the posts. This can be useful here in Costa Rica, as well as at home, because you can access the copies from anywhere with an Internet connection. I did, in fact, upload all of my correspondence, passwords, and other personal information.
I agree with Travel Cosult…, but you must scan the page with the entry stamp when scanning your passport because that is what they will be looking for if you are asked to make it. You can only do this once you’ve arrived in the country. Many places will scan it and email it to you for a small fee, but if that isn’t an option, photocopy it and keep the photocopy with you while keeping your passport safe. The majority of hotels would make a duplicate for you.
