OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAM Radiation Therapy, one of modern medicine’s most sophisticated tools, is crucial in the treatment of cancer. Radiation therapy is used by more than half of all cancer patients at some point during their treatment, and more than half of all radiotherapy patients are considered potentially curable.
In addition to administering the prescribed treatments, the radiation therapist is responsible for keeping track of and auditing treatment records, monitoring patient responses, helping with nursing care, and providing nutritional advice to the patient. The radiation therapist, along with the radiation oncologist and the radiation physicist, is a key member of the cancer treatment team and plays an active role in planning and executing the course of therapy.

Radiation therapy is a type of allied health profession that uses radiation to treat diseases, particularly cancer. The Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy is a four-year program with a two-year “2+2” component. Students take two years of liberal and pre-professional scientific education classes at the University of St. Francis, then two years of professional coursework and clinical training at an affiliated hospital or cancer center. The curriculum is intended to provide students with a well-rounded education in radiation therapy by balancing didactic and clinical components. After completing the professional education portion of the program, graduates are eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists’ national certification examination (AART). Radiation therapists continue to have a bright work outlook. Employment in the field is expected to grow 14% by 2024, according to the US Department of Labor Statistics. The demand for radiation therapists is expected to rise as our country’s population ages. In May 2015, the median annual salary for a radiation therapist was $80,220. Every spring, students are accepted into the professional sequence of courses and begin their studies in the fall semester. Annually, applications for the professional component must be submitted by December 15th.

Graduates receive an Associate of Science (A.S.) in Radiation Therapy after successfully completing the program. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination will then be available to you. You will be able to use the title Registered Technologist and the abbreviation R.T. if you pass your exams (T). You may also apply for a license through the Florida Department of Health’s Bureau of Radiation Control.
