Certificate vs diploma vs degree

For more information on financial aid opportunities for students in the Post-Baccalaureate certificate program, please contact OneStop. MS students are eligible for state and federal financial assistance, but Certificate students are not.
For admission to the certificate, only one letter of recommendation is required, but we recommend at least two (one familiar with your current situation and (if within three years) one familiar with your academic background).
Here is where you can submit your application electronically. The deadline to apply for the certificate is March 1 for fall consideration and October 1 for spring consideration. These are the most important deadlines. If you apply after these deadlines, we cannot ensure that your application will be considered.
Any courses taken as part of this certificate program can be applied to the Data Science M.S. degree if the student is later accepted.
The M.S. degree, on the other hand, requires a minimum GPA of 3.25, which is higher than the certificate requirement.
A student who maintains a minimum GPA of 3.25 in their certificate program courses may apply for the M.S. degree using the usual procedure, and they may use all of the same application materials as for the certificate program, plus a letter from a University of Minnesota faculty member.

A post-baccalaureate certificate is one such option. Students may choose a certificate over a degree for a variety of reasons, including gaining more preparation for a graduate degree. Although a post-baccalaureate certificate is not the same as a degree, it is advantageous because it helps students to gain relevant field experience and develop skills in a specific field.
“Usually a four-to seven-course, self-contained credential, the certificate provides specialized academic study, or job-specific skills training, with a minimum investment of time and money, and potentially significant payback,” according to the Washington Post. These programs are often shorter than degree programs and are designed to supplement material learned during undergraduate education. Students who enroll in a certificate program may not only determine how well they will fit into a graduate program, but they may also be able to find work.
