Pierce County was formed in 1857 and named after President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was formed from the lands of Appling and Ware counties.
General David Blackshear, who fought Indians in Georgia and Florida during the War of 1812, was named after the county seat, Blackshear.

Prior to 1971, marriage licenses could only be obtained through the mail.

Because you are already married in another state or country, you are unable to apply for a marriage license in Washington. You might still have a ceremony, but you wouldn’t need to go to the county clerk’s office to get a marriage license.
– The signed marriage certificate will be returned to our office for recording by your officiant. – You can request certified copies either via our Annex drop box system or by mailing your request to the Auditor’s Office using a Request for Marriage Records form available in the lobby. – To change your name, take a certified copy of your marriage certificate to Social Security and your local driver’s license office.
