The University of Washington – Seattle was founded in 1861, about ten years after Seattle was established. The university is both a sea-grant and a space-grant institution. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to methods for resolving disputes that may better suit the needs of the parties than conventional litigation. This intensive course covers both traditional and non-traditional approaches to dispute resolution. The development and application of settlement options in the United States will be discussed by participants. The course will cover the mediation process, the mediator’s role, and the issues that arise during mediation. The art of negotiating will be discussed, as well as how to choose the most cost-effective and least intrusive ADR approach to achieve the best possible outcome for both parties. Traditional approaches such as negotiation, mediation, and arbitration, as well as more modern variants such as summary jury trials and mini-trials, will be discussed in depth.

Throughout the program, you’ll be in class with the same group of students, giving you plenty of opportunities to interact with them and your teachers.

Students learn how to look up Washington Court Rules for the county, superior, appellate, and federal courts. The importance of interpreting and applying rules to law office processes is stressed. Students also learn how to differentiate between procedural and substantive rules. The interrelationship of laws with the Washington Digest, the Revised Code of Washington (RCW), and the requirements of the Appellate Court is discussed. Students examine the Idaho Rules of Civil Procedure and Idaho Rules of Criminal Procedure, focusing on the differences between these rules and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
