If you are 17 years old, have completed driver education, and have a form MV-285 driver education certificate, this is not required. You would also have completed the required amount of supervised driving practice hours. Before taking your road test, students under the age of 18 must have a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving, with at least 15 hours at night (after sunset). You’ll need to complete some paperwork and tests in addition to receiving the appropriate amount of training. We’ve put together this step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth transition to your New York driver’s license.
All new drivers under the age of 18 must complete a 5-hour driver education course approved by the state of New York (also called a Pre-Licensing Course). The standardized curriculum will teach you everything you need to know about New York driving laws and safe driving habits. However, this isn’t the only thing you’ll need to do; after all, it’s difficult to learn to drive without actually doing it.
After you’ve finished your NYS driver education course and behind-the-wheel training, and the 6-month period has passed, you’ll be eligible to take the drivers license test. Make sure you have all of the paperwork you’ll need before you leave; you’ll be taking it with you to your road test. The following will be included:
