Lone Star College–North Harris (formerly North Harris College, NHC) is a public community college in Harris County, Texas, near Houston, that offers Associate’s degrees and program certifications in over 110 fields of study. The Lone Star College System, which includes LSC-North Harris, is a community college system that serves the Greater Houston area.
Three people were injured in a shooting in the campus courtyard near the library on January 22, 2013. The gunman was overheard arguing with a student named Jody Neal, then walked away, only to return with a handgun drawn from his bag. Neal was shot three times by the gunman. [2] A bullet struck a maintenance worker in the leg. The gunman shot himself in the legs by mistake. [three] [4] According to witnesses, up to six shots were fired. [3] The campus was immediately evacuated and placed on “lockdown” following the shooting. [5] At Ben Taub Hospital, two people with multiple gunshot wounds were in critical condition. A fourth person was taken to the hospital after suffering a heart attack. [number six] [7] The shooter ran into nearby woodland, where he was pursued by officers, who apprehended him later. The district commissioners cannot be individual defendants in CCEMS’ case against the district, according to Judge Latosha Lewis Payne of Harris County’s 55th Judicial District Court. She also threw out the charge that the district had violated the Texas Open Meetings Act.

The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA) has designated Lone Star College System (LSCS) as a provider of “Qualifying Educational Credit for the CPA Examination.” Thirteen LSCS accounting courses meet the TSBPA’s definition of upper-division accounting required for the CPA exam. Individuals with a baccalaureate or higher degree from a Board recognized educational institution can receive the thirty (30) advanced accounting hours and upper level related business hours necessary to sit for the CPA exam with this designation. To earn the Advanced Technical Certificate in Professional Accountancy, students must complete at least 24 semester hours of accounting and related business courses at LSC. Lone Star College, ranked sixth nationally by Diverse Issues in Higher Education, is a multi-campus public institution in Greater Houston that offers 92 associate degrees and 110 certificate programs, including 21 entirely online, with a student-teacher ratio of 20:1. The Computer Programming Specialist A.A.S., for example, is a 60-credit, two-year online program that allows undergrads to earn Microsoft, Oracle, and Amazon certifications for a median mid-career salary of $60,900. The 60-credit Accounting A.A.S., chaired by Prof. Ellen Junious, prepares entry-level financial clerks in eight-week online classes ranging from Internal Auditing to Federal Taxation, with an employment rate of 85 percent.
The International Studies A.A., which is available online through D2L Brightspace, is a 60-credit, SACS-accredited program that includes opportunities to travel overseas from Chile to Italy for 2+2 transfers into humanities bachelor’s degrees at UH-Downtown, Saint Thomas, Prairie View A&M, and Texas Tech. The 60-credit Teaching A.A., directed by Prof. Donna Willingham, aligns with State Board for Education Certification Pedagogy requirements for future K-12 teachers to complete their first two bachelor’s years with field experiences at Frostwood Elementary or Kingwood High School.
