Before issuing a certificate, the certificate authority requires information in order to verify the applicant. The CSR includes a public key and a private key that the applicant must produce. The certificate authority requires the following information to be included in the CSR: distinguished name, business name, town, department name, country, area, and generic email address. The CSR also contains the fully qualified host name of the server to identify the server for which a certificate request is made. An applicant must provide the hostname and key size to verify the CSR. CSR keys must be 2048 bits or longer, according to the latest encryption standard.
