You will develop the field, technical, and analytical skills necessary for successful careers in hydro- and environmental geology as a student in Western Michigan University’s certificate program in hydrogeology. Aquifer testing and analysis, contaminant transport and remediation, drilling and water well construction, installation and development, and near-surface geophysics will all be covered. Water, soil, gas, and sediment samples, field geochemistry, scientific writing, proper data collection, field documentation, scientific presentation, and analysis will all be covered. Students can gain expertise as well as the ability to carry out appropriate field strategies and develop technical and problem-solving skills through a combination of online academic year and in-person summer field courses.
You will learn how to design an inquiry, gather and analyze your own data, form interpretations, and share your findings with colleagues, faculty, and members of the geosciences community as part of your program. Drinking water supplies, wastewater treatment, water resource availability, subsurface contaminant transport, water quality and quality assessment, the impacts of climate and land-use change on water and wetland resources, and many other environmental issues all require trained environmental professionals. This program will provide you with the specialized expertise, critical thinking, and communication skills you’ll need to be a successful environmental professional.
