The Master Gardener Volunteer Program at Michigan State University has been around since 1978. Its mission is to support Michigan State University Extension specialists and educators in providing Michigan residents with the most current and environmentally sound horticulture information through a network of trained volunteers who receive support and advice from Michigan State University Extension specialists and educators.
To become accredited, they must complete an educational and volunteer component within the first year. They must complete annual education and volunteer hours, as well as pay an annual recertification fee, to keep their certification. The educational component is comprehensive, requiring 14 weeks of attendance and completion. The class is normally held once a week for four hours on one day or night.

Participants must achieve an 80 percent proficiency on weekly quizzes and a final exam.

After Botany 1, you can take the remaining core courses in any order. If Botany 1 is not listed as a prerequisite, the course can be taken at any time as long as there are no other requirements.
Each core course must have a grade of at least 70% to qualify for the certificate. All certificate requirements must be completed within five years of the first core course’s start date.
Passing proficiency exams for approved courses or offering transcripts showing grades of at least 70% for similar courses can be used to prove proficiency for up to 20% of the coursework. The program does not have its own registration process.
