The Farmer’s Tax Exemption Matrix was recently revised by the Department. For each type of purchase, this document describes which exemption certificate to use. Please read it over thoroughly before making any purchases.
If you are a “eligible farmer,” you are exempt from paying sales tax on replacement parts for farm machinery and equipment, as well as some related services. A completed Farmer’s Certificate for Wholesale Purchases and Sales Tax Exemptions must be submitted to the seller.
Businesses that are eligible for a sales and use tax exemption on equipment and facilities used in livestock nutrient management no longer need to apply for an exemption certificate from the Department as of June 12, 2014. To obtain the exemption on qualifying purchases, these companies must instead provide their vendor with a Farmers’ Certificate for Wholesale Purchases and Sales Tax Exemptions. For more information, see our special notice Changes to the Sales Tax Exemption for Livestock Nutrient Management.

You must apply for an agriculture and wood registration number (Ag/Timber Number) from the Comptroller to claim a tax exemption on qualifying items. When purchasing qualifying items, you must include the Ag/Timber Number on the agricultural exemption certificate (PDF) or the timber exemption certificate (PDF).
On the exemption certificate you give to retailers on qualifying purchases, you must include the expiration date. If you already have an exemption certificate with your Ag/Timber Number on file, you can update it with the expiration date and initial it for the retailer’s records.
You must first register to build a secure online profile if you do not already have an eSystems/Webfile account with us. Log on as a returning user if necessary. It takes about 10 minutes to complete the application. No signature is needed, and your Ag/Timber Number will be issued at the conclusion of the application process.
