The demand for trained program evaluation practitioners has steadily increased in recent years. In funding agencies, non-profit organizations, and the private sector, new data collection methods and accountability patterns have created a demand for well-designed program assessments. Our program evaluation certificate will prepare you to lead program evaluation efforts. You’ll learn how to use applied methods, strategies, and processes, as well as how to integrate evaluation into broader economic, social, and political contexts.
Coursework must total at least 12 credits and include 8-9 credits of mandatory coursework and 3-4 credits of elective coursework. Students with a sufficient background and prior course experience may request a waiver of the content requirements.
To meet the overall program minimum of 12 credits, students may select 3-4 credits of elective coursework from the following list. Additional courses may be supervised by the evaluation studies program coordinator.
What is credential evaluation?
The graduate certificate in program evaluation and assessment is designed for part-time and full-time graduate students who want to gain specialized knowledge of evaluation theory and practice. This program is especially useful for people who may need to plan and conduct workplace evaluations. The 15-credit certificate program is designed for those who need to conduct evaluations and integrate the findings into program planning and decision-making. Hours obtained for the certificate can be applied to a master’s or doctoral degree program in educational psychology or higher education. Hours obtained in educational psychology or higher education master’s or doctoral programs are not eligible for the certificate. Requirements for a Certificate There are 15 credit hours in total.
The American Evaluation Association’s Program Evaluation Standards guide the learning outcomes associated with the certificate. Students will have demonstrated experience and skills in relation to the following criteria by the end of the certificate:

The assessment and evaluation graduate certificate is for educators who want to learn more about how to better understand and improve teaching, learning, and educational programming. You’ll learn how to create, develop, and administer educational tests, as well as how to gather, evaluate, and interpret test results. You’ll look at a variety of assessment tools for assessing the importance of data, student growth, and program goals. You’ll learn about research methods and have the chance to do in-depth research on a topic in education. Finally, you’ll learn how to synthesize data in order to make informed decisions about educational reform and policy.
The Certificate in Evaluation & Evaluation equips students with the skills and expertise needed to design, create, implement, and analyze a wide range of assessment systems, as well as evaluate teaching, learning, and educational programming and devise various strategies to synthesize and use data for decision-making.
The role of wider policy contexts in assessment, evaluation, and decision-making is emphasized in each of the courses. Professionals in education, broadly defined, may be the target audience for this certificate. This includes public and private school teachers, education administrators, district office employees, and psychologists, social workers, and family studies experts. This credential may also be useful for nonprofit workers, such as museum educators and anyone looking for a career change. This graduate certificate can be completed in one academic year by completing four four-credit courses, three of which are mandatory and one of which is optional.

This Advanced Certificate teaches you how to evaluate the efficacy of funded, programmatic, and policy interventions. Evaluation researchers, social and community service managers, management analysts, and survey researchers, as well as policy practitioners in domestic and foreign environments tasked with designing, financing, choosing, or evaluating social programs, will benefit from the curriculum.
You’ll graduate with the skills you need to work in government and nonprofit environments investigating the effectiveness of policy interventions, not just understanding key aspects of impacts of policy studies, empirical methods, data analysis, and survey methods.
CORE-GP 1011 is a prerequisite for most other courses in the certificate and must be taken in the first semester. Students who are able to waive CORE-GP 1011 will be able to replace it with an advanced elective.
Note: Because PADM-GP 2172 Advanced Empirical Methods is only offered in the fall semester (and requires PADM-GP 2902 as a prerequisite), students who start the certificate program in the spring semester and want to take the course should carefully consider the sequence. Enrolling in PADM-GP 2902 in the summer may be an option.
