The Higher Degree Research (HDR) Convenor is in charge of connecting prospective students with potential managers and ensuring that enquirers have access to admission and scholarship information. Many jobs in the criminal justice system require knowledge of criminology, including police officers, probation and parole officers, and social workers. Criminology graduates’ critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills make them appealing to employers in fields other than criminal justice, such as social research and politics.
Not all forms of crime are the same. What are the various kinds of crime that occur in our society? What types of crimes exist about which we know little or are simply not reported to the police or the media? How do we explain people’s apprehension about reporting crimes in which they have been a victim? Some seemingly innocuous crimes, such as counterfeiting designer goods, have been linked to the financing of more serious crimes like terrorism and human trafficking; so why do people turn a “blind eye” to these “minor” offenses? What strategies have governments and other organizations used to raise public awareness about these crimes?

An introduction to crime and criminology free certificate

Students interested in completing a certificate program in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences must meet the University Calendar’s admission requirements. Students may also look up General Regulations for Certificate Programs and Graduation Requirements in the University Calendar.
Students should contact an academic advisor for help with course planning, announcing their program of study, prerequisite and registration matters, and questions about the eligibility of any courses not listed here during their program of study.
Prerequisites for the course will apply. Students should be aware that Psychology 1000 and 1001 are prerequisites for Psychology 2920 (in addition to the 21 credit hours required for the certificate). In addition, since 6 credit hours in Sociology are required for Sociology 4080, and Sociology 3040 and 3150 are required for Sociology 4099, students who have declared a Sociology Major and/or a Criminology certificate will be given priority for enrollment.

Our Criminology Certificate of Higher Education will teach you about historical and contemporary trends and patterns in crime, as well as psychological approaches to criminal behavior, social explanations for crime, and how criminal justice systems work in practice.
You can expect to learn in a stimulating environment with students from various backgrounds and professional experiences. Our unique evening teaching model allows those who work or care for others during the day to complete their university education.
The Department of Criminology offers a flexible schedule with three semesters of instruction (autumn, spring, summer). You will begin the certificate program in any of these semesters, so there is no need to wait.
Alternatively, you can apply to join Year 2 of our part-time BSc Criminology and Criminal Justice if you complete the first three modules (Understanding Crime, The Criminal Justice Process, and Sociology of Crime).
