Our courses are suitable for anyone who wants to write a short story or a novel, from aspiring short story writers to established novelists. This Specialization gives you the tools to achieve your goal, whether you have a completed novel on your desk that needs a fresh look or have had the germ of an idea for a decade. You will strengthen your ability to not only refine your writing, but also to critique writing in general and find inspiration in the works you are already reading, through four courses focused on a critical aspect of writing and taken in any order you choose.

The Certificate Program in Writing consists of 8 courses totaling 240 hours of instruction, with three required courses and five restricted electives chosen from two categories: literature (2 courses) and writing workshops (2 courses) (3 courses). A nonrefundable certificate application fee is required of all candidates.
Courses must be taken for a letter grade in order to graduate. To be eligible for the certificate, you must have a minimum 2.5 overall grade point average and a C or better in each course. Those who complete the certificate with a GPA of 3.9 will receive a Certificate With Distinction. Within five years, all coursework must be completed. In order to retain adequate academic progress in the certificate, it is recommended that two courses be completed each year.
Creative writing correspondence program
The Professional Certificate in Creative Writing is intended to teach you the skills you’ll need to write in a variety of genres. In order to develop more specific skills, you will learn core creative writing skills and choose from a selection of electives in Fiction, Creative Nonfiction, Stage & Screenwriting, Children’s Writing, Poetry, and/or The Business of Writing. Whether you use these courses to explore personal interests, seek professional development, or achieve career goals, you’ll benefit from a structured course of study and the opportunity to earn a certificate.
Earning at least 28 quarter units in Creative Writing and related courses is required for the program. Depending on their workload, students should be able to complete the certificate program in 2.5 years or less.
