The Generalist, EC-6 degree is a certification degree for those who plan to work with students in an Early Childhood-6th grade school setting and need to be certified as a teacher. People who pursue this degree plan to teach in a public school (grades K-6) or a state or federally funded early childhood program (such as Head Start when affiliated with a Public School District). Individuals who complete this degree will have fulfilled the educational requirements* for the Generalist, EC-6 Teacher Certification in the state of Texas.
The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences, Early Childhood Emphasis is a non-certification degree intended for people who already have an Associate’s degree and want to work with children and families in positions that don’t require teacher certification. The growth, development, and diversity of children are studied in these classes. Students who complete this degree will be prepared to work in child care facilities, federally funded prekindergarten centers, private day-care or preschool institutions, family child care, infant-toddler programs, or non-profit organizations that work with children and families.

The purpose of these guidelines is to increase uniformity in the use of terms for certificate programs and related non-degree programs at St. Mary’s University, as well as to establish guidelines for the development and management of academic certificate programs. Workshops and short courses are one type of program; non-academic credit certificate programs are another; and academic certificate programs are the third. The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs must accept any exceptions to these categories or policies.
Workshops and short courses, as well as non-academic and academic certificate programs, are a rapidly evolving form of higher education that can be particularly useful in providing working adults with the skills and knowledge they need to advance their professional development while also catering to our students’ specialized interests. These policies are designed to support St. Mary’s commitment to meeting the needs of our students and community while remaining true to the university’s mission.
