The RCM – Royal Conservatory of Music – was just getting started with their program in the United States at the time. It’s become quite popular in my studio, so in this post, I’ll compare it to the CM – Certificate of Merit, which is also quite popular in California.
The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) is a Canadian institution. The CM is based in the state of California. The RCM has gone by many names for their program, including Music Achievement Program, Music Development Program, and Certificate Program. The MTAC – Music Teachers Association of California – is in charge of the CM. Both programs are well-known and have a long track record. The best way to learn more about them is to go to their websites. In essence, they both provide students with graded music examinations.
Preparatory Level, Levels 1-9, and Advanced Level are all available in CM (Level 10). Preparatory A, Preparatory B, Levels 1-10, and ARCT are all covered by RCM (a diploma, Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music). Because the various levels are similar in terms of difficulty, CM accepts the equivalent RCM level, and students can take CM examinations using RCM books.

I assisted at the registration desk during my first year. I worked in the theory test correction ranks both this year and last year. A row of long tables is set up in the theory test correction room. All day, teachers rub elbows on opposite sides of these desks. We have red pencils, so that’s what we do. The red pencils are in our hands. If an answer is incorrect, we mark it. After a couple of hours, fatigue sets in.

The Music Teachers Association of California (MTAC) sponsors the Certificate of Merit (CM) music program, which began in 1933. Approximately 30,000 students participate in the CM program each year across the state. Students of the piano, violin, cello, viola, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, horn, voice, and harp can be evaluated.

Exam (Practice) Exam bits, technique, sight reading, and aural training are all put to the test. To advance to practical examinations in grades 6, 7, and 8, students must have already passed grade 5 theory.
