Certificates of Birth and Death Marriage Certificates Before picking up the “Certificate of Marriage,” you must wait three days. The license can be picked up without both parties being present. If the wedding is officiated by someone who isn’t a clergy member or a Justice of the Peace, the officiant must obtain a “One Day Solemnizer” certificate from the Secretary of State’s office. More information is available on the Secretary of State’s website, which is linked below. If necessary, we can provide a list of local Justices of the Peace. The couple will still receive a certified copy of their Marriage License from the location where they applied for it; it does not follow them around. The Clerk’s Office is where marriages are performed.

Please double-check your license with your partner before the ceremony to ensure that there are no mistakes. After the marriage is solemnized, all corrections would cost $75.00. The marriage must take place within 60 days of the date you first applied for the license, or it will expire. In addition, the marriage must be solemnized in Massachusetts to be legal. The ceremony may be performed by a Priest, Minister, Rabbi, or other religious official, as well as a Justice of the Peace. Witnesses are not required at a Justice of the Peace ceremony. Some religions require witnesses, so check with the person who will be conducting the ceremony to see if they are required.
Three days after you submit your marriage license application, the license will be issued (licenses applied for Monday can be picked up Thursday; licenses applied for Tuesday can be picked up Friday; licenses applied for Wednesday, Thursday or Friday can be picked up the following Monday). There is no charge for picking it up at the City Clerk’s Office. Only Party A, Party B, or the parents of Party A or B as noted on the marriage license with photo identification may pick up impounded marriage licenses.
