When you can’t find a birth record | ancestry

Only birth records for infants born in Long Beach are maintained by the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services. Until the child’s first birthday, these birth certificates can be bought from our office. The birth certificate can be obtained after the child has reached the age of one year by calling the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office at (562) 462-2137. Please contact the county of birth directly for births that occurred outside of Los Angeles County, as each jurisdiction has its own processes for obtaining birth certificates.
To obtain an application packet, go to the Health Department at 2525 Grand Ave, Long Beach, CA 90815 in person. Complete an application and mail it to the above address “Attention: Vital Records” along with a payment of $28 (per certified copy) in the form of a check or money order. Within 7 to 10 business days, the birth certificate can be mailed or picked up at our office. We apologize for any inconvenience, but NO BIRTH CERTIFICATES ARE AVAILABLE ON THE SAME DAY! However, if you request a rush service (for a fee), your certificates will be ready to pick up the next business day.

Only certain people are permitted to obtain a certified copy of a birth, death, or marriage record. To obtain a driver’s license, passport, social security card, or other identity-related services, an approved certified copy of a birth record is required. The list of approved persons can be found below.
An Informational Certified Copy is available to those who are not approved or do not wish to submit a notarized Certificate of Identity. The words “INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY” are imprinted across the face of Informational Certified Copies.

Issues from the Los Angeles County Recorder’s Office Los Angeles County birth certificates, authorized and informational copies; authorized copies are generally suitable for passport, social security, employment, and personal identification purposes.
