When applying for a US passport or Social Security benefits, a certified birth certificate copy is needed. Federal, state, and local government departments all recognize it as legitimate proof of citizenship in the United States. A birth certificate may be required when applying for some work, as well as when obtaining or renewing a driver’s license in the future.
A clear photocopy of the original birth certificate would not be accepted as appropriate identification in most cases. Instead, you’ll need a “certified” copy of your birth certificate from the state in which your birth was registered.
The official state registrar’s raised, embossed, impressed, or multicolored seal, the registrar’s signature, and the date the certificate was submitted with the registrar’s office, which must be within one year of the person’s date of birth, all appear on a certified copy of a birth certificate.
NOTE: When applying for the Transportation Safety Administration’s (TSA) common PreCheck program, which enables members to bypass security lines at more than 180 airports without having to remove their shoes, laptops, liquids, belts, or light jackets, a certified copy of the applicant’s birth certificate is needed.

What type of birth certificate is needed for a passport

Until November 1, 2000, some certificates for multiple births (twins, triplets, etc.) contained the time of birth with either the given name or the family name. When entering your given name or family name information, you must include the time of birth as it appears on your certificate. Smith, for example, at 10:05 p.m.
It’s likely that your certificate was re-registered before or after 1993 as a result of an upgrade, correction, name change, or legitimation. This is due to a change in the certificate registration number and year.
If your certificate only has one name (either your given or family name) and the other field says ‘no registered surname’ or ‘no registered given name,’ enter the information as it appears.
Your certificate would have a registration number and the name of the district if it was given before November 26, 2001. In the Registration number area, you must enter both the district number and the registration number. The district number is 1 and the identification number is 234 in the case of Registration number 1/234/56/X. In the Registration number area, you will type 0100234

How to order birth or death certificates online

Parents do not receive birth certificates for their newborns automatically. The information collected in the hospital is used exclusively to record the birth. You will not be allowed to order your child’s birth certificate from the doctor. One of the methods mentioned below must be used to receive the certificate.
You will be required to request a copy of a valid government, school, or employer provided photo ID if you are applying for a copy of a birth certificate through one of our online vendors. On all orders, VitalChek conducts online identity verification of the person ordering the record. Individuals that do not have identification will benefit from this extra security measure. You will be asked to upload a valid ID if you do not pass the online identity verification.
The aim of Vital Records is to provide same-day service; most requests can be handled the same day. Please arrive by 4 p.m. to ensure sufficient processing time for programs that need additional processing time, such as paternity affidavits, corrections, and amendments. For requests such as paternity affidavits, adoption processing, corrections, and amendments, same-day service is not assured.

Normally, the registration number appears in the top right corner (where the number 28 appears). The registration number could appear in various parts of the certificate (for example, next to the date of birth column on the left hand side of the certificate or at the bottom of the certificate next to the Registrars/Deputy Registrars signature), as the majority of these certificates were originally handwritten.
Your registration number in the DVS should be seven digits long. The district number should come first, followed by the registration number. The first two digits should be the district number, and the remaining five should be the registration number.
If the district number is less than 2 digits long or the registration number is less than 5 digits long, add more 0s to the front to fill in the gaps.
If the District Number is 1 and the registration number is 123, then the 7-digit number should be entered as 0100123 in the DVS.
During this time, some births could have been recorded with less details than the standard format. As a result, these birth certificates will be shorter and will not follow the standard Registration District numbering conventions.
